Chokecherry

Chokecherry  photograph

Chokecherries were an important food source for Plains Indians and early traders, trappers, and explorers. They were dried and crushed, then mixed with meat and fat for pemmican. Butter, jelly, sauces, and wine can also be made from them. The bark and roots were used for medicine.
