In the heat of summer, Theodore Roosevelt would sit in a rocking chair on the shady veranda of his Elkhorn ranch house. A row of cottonwood trees grew nearby, and he enjoyed the sounds of their rustling leaves and the calls of the mourning doves that perched in their branches.
