Well, I’ve studied about the history of pastels and typed up a list of resources and another of favorite art quotations. Here’s one that that is rather ironic, but fitting, as I prepare to show others how to draw a landscape tomorrow at Dickinson State University.

I used to think that somebody could teach me to paint a landscape. I hunted and hunted for that person and finally found that I had to do it myself.

That being said, I hope that I can aid the students with an introduction to the wonderful medium of pastel. It’s a great choice for capturing the beauty of the countryside that surrounds us here in southwestern North Dakota.

I had a chance to talk to a bunch of art students yesterday during the reception for my “Prairie Territory” exhibit. It was fun to hear what they thought and what they were curious about, and I hope that they received some benefit from my experience.

“Prairie Territory” Exhibit at Dickinson State University

Dickinson State University Art Gallery will host a reception for my “Prairie Territory” exhibit today from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. in Klinefelter Hall. Pastel drawings of North Dakota landscapes, horses, and buffalo will be featured, along with some digital photographs of cottonwood trees. I’m really looking forward to seeing how everything looks in that space, and hope to see some of you there!

The artist’s reception for my “Prairie Territory” exhibit at Dickinson State University Art Gallery is only one week away. It will be held August 30th from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Klinefelter Hall. Please stop by if you can, and enjoy the images that celebrate the beauty of life on the grasslands. Pastel drawings and digital photographs of the trees, hills, fields, badlands, buffalo and horses of North Dakota will all be on display for your viewing pleasure!

The new postcards for my “Prairie Territory” exhibit at Dickinson State University Art Gallery are available now. There will be a reception on Monday, August 30th, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the gallery in Klinefelter Hall. I hope you can stop by for a while if you’re in the area. I will be teaching a pastel workshop at South Campus on Friday, Septemember 10th, from 10:00 to noon. There is a $25.00 charge to the public. I’m looking forward to these events, and am honored to be a part of DSU’s art exhibit schedule. I think I’ll start gathering my materials and information today, so that I’m totally prepared for the workshop.

“Blue Buffalo” on DSU Postcard

A selection of my images of the North Dakota prairie will be on display at the Dickinson State University Art Gallery now through August. The exhibit is titled “Prairie Territory” and it features both pastel drawings and digital photographs. Images of cottonwood trees, badlands, fields, horses, buffalo, sunflowers, and the Little Missouri River are included in this collection which celebrates life on the Northern Plains. There will be a reception on Monday, August 30th from 2 to 5 p.m. Hope you can stop by and check it out! The gallery is located on the lower level of Klinefelter Hall. “Equus XXVI” is part of the “Prairie Territory” Exhibit

I thoroughly enjoyed the Arts Roundup at DSU on July 2nd and 3rd. It was great to meet Sheila Rieman, Randall Kohl, and April Barnhart, as well as Kevin Holten and the friendly people who provided assistance at the Alumni Foundation Center. It was a pleasant surprise to learn that the Dickinson State University Alumni Association has purchased my “Prairie Hill” drawing. I’m glad it will be in a public collection. The next stop for my “Prairie Pastels” touring exhibition is the James Memorial Art Center in Williston. It will be on display from May 16 through June 15. Hope you can see it if you’re in the area.  Here is the address and phone number:
