Vertical Cottonwood Compositions

We had another day of frosty trees, along with a new dusting of snow. I went back to the cottonwoods to capture some vertical compositions, which I think are quite dramatic. It wasn’t nearly as cold today, so I could take more time and enjoy the wintry scene. I’ll post a batch of them when I can.

I went over to photograph the cottonwoods in the morning as well as the afternoon yesterday. My fingers could only take so much of the cold before I had to head back indoors. I was pleased to get so many workable images in spite of the hurried approach.

There was a light frost and an overcast sky yesterday, which inspired me to go back over to the cottonwoods for more compositions. I really liked the way the filters worked with these weather conditions, and wanted to have more images to use for greeting cards, prints, or whatever.

I’ve assembled all twelve of my new metal frames for the cottonwood prints, and I think they look good together. I’ve also gone over the background of my “Summer in the Badlands” drawing with a light blue pastel pencil.

Cottonwood Prints

I made a series of twelve digital prints of cottonwood tree images last night. It was fun to see how the filtered versions would look in a 5 x 7 ” format. I have some nice new 11 x 14 ” white mats with a deep bevel that will really set them off. A series of sunflower images would also be good to experiment with in this way. Printmaking is something I really enjoy, and would like to learn more about. I was studying about monotypes and solarplates the other night when the lights went out. Maybe someday I’ll actually get around to doing something with original prints.
