September Prairie

Written by Cris Fulton on August 24th, 2010

I’m enjoying working on images of the prairie in September, and made some progress on “September Grasslands” this morning.

Sunflowers along the Patio

Written by Cris Fulton on August 23rd, 2010

It was still too breezy tonight for close-up photos of sunflowers, so I backed up and got a more distant view of them along the patio. I’m still waiting to see any orange Mexican sunflowers or any seashell cosmos.

“Prairie Light” in the Afternoon

Written by Cris Fulton on August 23rd, 2010

It was so windy today that it was very appealing to work inside, catching up on some household chores and another badlands drawing.

I made some progress on my drawing “Clouds over the Grasslands” today. It will frame up to 30 x 30 inches, and is the first square format I’ve done.

“Prairie Territory” Reception Next Monday

Written by Cris Fulton on August 23rd, 2010

The artist’s reception for my “Prairie Territory” exhibit at Dickinson State University Art Gallery is only one week away. It will be held August 30th from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Klinefelter Hall. Please stop by if you can, and enjoy the images that celebrate the beauty of life on the grasslands. Pastel drawings and digital photographs of the trees, hills, fields, badlands, buffalo and horses of North Dakota will all be on display for your viewing pleasure!

Fields of Wheat

Written by Cris Fulton on August 22nd, 2010

I went out into the wheat fields north of Bowman this morning and felt the sun beating down on them and me. It was almost 100 degrees today, and a day to remember when the frost and ice of winter become too hard to take.

September Drawings

I’ve made some progress on a couple of my drawings of badlands in September. That is one of my favorite months to be out in the great grasslands of North Dakota.

A Little of This, A Little of That

Written by Cris Fulton on August 19th, 2010

I took it fairly easy today, doing a few things around the house and garden, and nothing too strenuous. Things I’ve been putting off, like backing up the blog and getting it updated. And things like pulling out flowers that have seen better days, even though I’ve been hoping for their comeback. After making a couple of Facebook posts and having a good late summer nap, I even got around to making some progress on a drawing. It’s going to be 33 x 28 inches when it’s framed, which is a little different than my usual 38 x 28 inches size.

Back to the Studio

Written by Cris Fulton on August 19th, 2010

After some time in the garden yesterday, I finally got back to work on drawings in my studio. I photographed the progress with my new camera, and it seems to do a very good job. There are some questions I have about image size and resolution, but that will become clearer with more study time. I did learn how to delete images on the camera, and that’s always good to know!

I printed out some new images of landscapes with filter effects yesterday, also, and think I might try my hand at drawing them. They might as well join the colorful series of horses and buffalo, right?

Filtered Sunflowers

Written by Cris Fulton on August 17th, 2010

I was anxious to try some more photos with my new camera this morning. It has a lot to offer, and I hope I can make good use of it. There is a wealth of information about it in a manual I printed out today. Here are a couple more sunflower images for the portfolio. They’re from the same original photograph, but with different filters from the computer. If I play around with the colors and shapes long enough, I may get some that will lend themselves to drawing. More than a few of the sunflowers have grown so tall that I will need a ladder to focus on them.
