I worked on my Dakota grasslands drawing this morning, and thought I was finished with it. After contemplating it, I think I will go back in and work on the fringe of grass in the near foreground.

There was a big sale on brochures and business cards, so I spent the last few days coming up with new ones. Now it’s back to the drawing board.

The Golden Grasslands

I went over the foreground of my “Golden Grasslands” oil stick diptych with a Shiva oilpaint stick named “Purple Sage.” I love that kind of name for an artist’s color, and wish that they would come up with lots more creative prairie colors.

Back to the Golden Badlands

I worked on a pastel pencil landscape of the badlands this morning, then switched over to my oil stick diptych of the badlands in the afternoon. It was good to use such a different medium after weeks of pastel pencil drawing.

“Dakota October” is in Medora

Sally Jeppson of the Arts Center in Jamestown stopped by on Monday and picked up my drawing “Dakota October” and delivered it to the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame in Medora. She was going to help Walter Piehl and Deane Colin Fay install a special art exhibit, “Cowboys and Indians — Alive & Well Today” that will be on view and for sale from May 15th through September 30th. About twenty artists from the region will have artwork in this show, and will donate 50% of the sale price to the Cowboy Hall of Fame. I’m really looking forward to seeing all the pieces. They will be available upon sale for people who are traveling through the area. Marsha Lehmann from Rhame and Tom Temple from Glendive are among the painters who will be represented.

Well, I finished and framed “Dakota October” today. I am happy with the way it turned out and I really like the curvy slopes and colors. It’s probably the most complex landscape I’ve tried so far. This country is so unbelievably beautiful, and this image kind of captures that for me.

Later on, I put “Dakota Grasslands Dream” back on the easel and worked on the foreground grasses. It is quite close to completion now, too.

Drawing on a Rainy Day

I worked on “Dakota October” again today, and have very little left to do on it now. Will take another look at it tomorrow before I frame it. We were without electricity for a couple of hours, so I had an extended break.
