Vertical Cottonwoods

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Well, I have finally gotten back to working on my vertical cottonwood compositions, which I first mentioned back on February 6th.

Vertical Cottonwood Compositions

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

We had another day of frosty trees, along with a new dusting of snow. I went back to the cottonwoods to capture some vertical compositions, which I think are quite dramatic. It wasn’t nearly as cold today, so I could take more time and enjoy the wintry scene. I’ll post a batch of them when I can.

More Cottonwood Compositions: Part II

Friday, February 5th, 2010

I went over to photograph the cottonwoods in the morning as well as the afternoon yesterday. My fingers could only take so much of the cold before I had to head back indoors. I was pleased to get so many workable images in spite of the hurried approach.

More Cottonwood Compositions

Friday, February 5th, 2010

There was a light frost and an overcast sky yesterday, which inspired me to go back over to the cottonwoods for more compositions. I really liked the way the filters worked with these weather conditions, and wanted to have more images to use for greeting cards, prints, or whatever.

Cottonwoods, Frosted and Filtered

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Well, the sky wasn’t blue blue today, but there was still some frost on the trees, so I thought I’d revisit the cottonwoods just to see what I might see. I kind of hated to put filters on the photographs I got yesterday, but thought the grey sky today might offer some good images to play with. Here are some of the colorful results from a not so colorful day.

Frosty Cottonwoods

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

We were treated to a stunning combination of thick, thick frost and a blue, blue sky here in Bowman today. I made a beeline for the cottonwood trees over by the railroad tracks on the east side of town. I took my time and wandered around under the lofty branches, savoring the sparkling blue and white designs all about me.

Someday I’d like to create an entire exhibit of cottonwood images. I think there is tremendous potential for these icons of the plains, and so I will continue to photograph them through the seasons and stages of their lives.

May 7th

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

It was another nice spring day here, with a little bit of rain in the afternoon. I worked on gardens again, and stopped by to see the cottonwoods in different light. Here are some versions with and without filters.

Cottonwoods in May

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

It was another beautiful day on the North Dakota prairie yesterday. I spent some time at the Prairie Walk in the afternoon, planting and trimming. On the way home, I pulled over to take a closer look at these wonderful old cottonwood trees.
