The Last Rabbit Tracks?

Friday, March 13th, 2009

Yesterday afternoon the sun was shining on the drifts of snow in the backyard, so I decided to make one last effort to capture the rabbit trails. With any luck, there won’t be any more days with fresh snow.

Making Tracks

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

Yesterday afternoon I discovered lots of interesting rabbit track patterns in the snowdrifts out in the backyard. I thought I’d capture them digitally while I could, as we are under another blizzard watch for tonight and tomorrow.

It was amazing to see how many different compositions had been created by the resident rabbits. I noticed a cottontail in the north hedge this morning, and wondered where he’ll find shelter in the harsh weather ahead.

Look at the cool blue color and the fresh, powdery texture of the snow. I find these prints extremely elegant.

One of the wonders of the winter season is to actually see the paths taken by our animal neighbors. It’s something one doesn’t really give much thought to during the rest of the year.

Think of all the trails a person creates in a lifetime, sometimes heading off in entirely new directions, sometimes staying on the same path over and over. Can you imagine looking at a map of every step you ever took?

One of the first things that came to mind as I observed all these track patterns, is that they resembled some sort of mysterious ancient alphabet, some kind of cuneiform characters written in snow.

Well, that’s it for this session of cottontail trails. I hope the blizzard is not too severe, and that it won’t last too long. Good luck to everybody in its path!
