A good crowd turned out to look over the projects of Angie Moser’s art students last night at the Bowman library. Color and creativity brightened the walls everywhere you looked. Nice job, everybody!

More “Art From The Heart”

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Well, I went back over to Bowman Regional Public Library today to get another dose of color and Christmas cheer. It was snowing lightly again, and the temperature was around zero degrees. Time to stroll through the rooms holding the “Art From The Heart” show once more! Everything will be on sale through the month of December, to give everybody a chance to get over there and take advantage of the great arts and crafts at really good prices! The proceeds will go to the Prairie Rose Art Association, which will use them for public art workshops. Get to the library and support your local arts and crafts people, and help provide artistic learning experiences for your community. That’s a good, good thing.

“Animals” Exhibit at Library

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

There is a wonderful new art exhibit at the Bowman Regional Public Library, with the title “Animals — Them And Us.” It was organized by the North Dakota Museum of Art and toured through the Museum’s Rural Arts Initiative. It is a marvelous collection of images, sculpture, and videos that depict the wide range of the kingdom Animalia. Be sure to stop in and look it over if you get the chance. The Prairie Rose Art Association hosted a reception for it last night, and Justin Dalzell from the NDMOA gave a very interesting guided tour.

Debra Marquart in Bowman

Friday, March 6th, 2009

Debra Marquart had a nice crowd at the Bowman library last night, where she led a discussion about her book The Horizontal World: growing up wild in the middle of nowhere. She grew up on a North Dakota farm, became a musician, and now teaches at Iowa State University. It was a lively, interesting, and enjoyable evening.

Installation of Theodore Roosevelt Kiosk

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Dickinson State University Theodore Roosevelt Center Kiosk

Last night the new Theodore Roosevelt Center kiosk was officially installed at Bowman Regional Public Library. What a splendid evening! The Bowman Community Band played some rousing patriotic songs, Mayor Lyn James gave a welcome address, Ken Steiner spoke on behalf of Bowman County, Dr. Richard McCallum made remarks on behalf of Dickinson State University, and Clay Jenkinson gave his usual magnificent performance as President Theodore Roosevelt. To top it all off, the Prairie Rose Art Guild served sparkling cider and assorted confections.

Dr. McCallum observed that it has taken the combined efforts of many groups to achieve something like this, from federal, state, county and city levels. All of the documents pertaining to the life of Theodore Roosevelt, which once required an expensive and extensive journey to the Library of Congress, will now be available in southwestern North Dakota. That is only fitting, as this is the country that had such a profound effect on his life, and his time out here was the one memory he would not have been willing to forget.

Clay Jenkinson made the point that it was the region around Bowman where Roosevelt had some of his most memorable experiences; his buffalo hunt near Pretty Butte, his first bighorn sheep at Bullion Butte, and his first antelope and handmade buckskin shirt from the Black Butte area. He stressed the importance of leading a strenuous life, as well as a life of reading and learning.

It was an inspiring and entertaining evening, one that made you glad to live in the Dakota ranch country that helped form one of the great leaders of this nation. Many thanks to everyone who contributed their efforts to this event.

Book Discussion at Library

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

The book To Kill A Mockingbird  was featured last night during a lively discussion at Bowman Regional Public Library. David R. Solheim, chair of the Department of Language and Literature at Dickinson State University, was the moderator. The event was well attended, and brought up some very interesting topics for consideration.

Solheim is a fine regional poet, as well, with books The Landscape Listens, West River, Inheritance, and On the Ward to his credit. The library has scheduled a poetry reading by him for sometime next January, and he will have new work to share at that time.
